Extremely shy, these turtles are amphibians. They are in great demand in the pet trade too.
The International Union for Conservation of Natural Flora and Fauna has categorised this species as endangered.
This species is categorised under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. Those indulging in the trade of Assam roofed turtles will have to face seven years of rigorous imprisonment with a penalty of Rs 10,000.
